How To Care For Your Rattan

Rattan is a leading interior trend and it's not going anywhere, anytime soon. It brings tone and texture into any home with its relaxed look providing the perfect balance to timber and stone surfaces.

Handcrafted by skilled artisans, this style of furniture is comprised of one-of-a-kind pieces that fill your home with stories through its personal, bespoke designs and not to mention, great for the environment.

It’s important to know how to properly care for your natural wicker, cane and rattan to ensure the longevity of your pieces.

Protecting Your Rattan

DO:

  • Regularly wipe dust and debris off the surface with a microfibre cloth to prevent buildup that can damage the fibres.
  • Vacuum rattan with a soft brush attachment and reach into crevices for thorough cleaning.
  • Treat mildew or spillages by wiping with a damp microfibre cloth and mild soap, then place in the sun or in front of a fan until the rattan dries.
  • Once a year, oil the rattan fibres with boiled linseed oil to avoid splitting. After brushing on the oil with a soft cloth, wipe away the excess and leave to dry.

DON’T:

  • Avoid using excessive water to clean rattan as it can fade and distort the wicker.
  • Unless needing to dry after spillages or cleaning, don’t place rattan outside or in direct sunlight as it can cause damage and discolouration.
  • Don’t use any harsh cleaning products on the rattan as it can dry out the fibres and cause cracking.

We recommend the Guardsman Cloth to help protect your rattan fibres and keep the dust at bay for your furniture.
